Psychiatric Services
Increasing understanding of the mind-body connection has led to the development of effective medical treatments for a variety of mental health problems that have a biological component. Limited psychiatric services, including evaluation, diagnosis and treatment, are provided to assist in the overall healing process.
Who is eligible for CCS Psychiatry services?
You must be seeing one of our CCS counselors to be eligible for psychiatric services . We will not schedule an initial appointment with you over the telephone. Psychiatric Care is an issue that you will need to discuss with your counselor. She/he will help you schedule the initial consult. All enrolled students are eligible for psychiatric services at CCS.
What is the cost?
If you have CSHI, there is a $15.00 co-pay for psychiatric services.
If you do not have CSHI, the fee is $165.00 for the initial visit and $75.00 for each session thereafter.
We do not accept any other type of health insurance. It is important for you to understand your health insurance benefit information. Your counselor will assist you in finding an outside provider, but knowing what you are eligible for is the first step.
What forms of payment does CCS accept?
BuckID, check, or money order. No cash will be accepted.
What will happen at my first appointment with the psychiatrist?
The psychiatrist will take a thorough history of the presenting problems and symptoms. This will include:
- A review of symptoms related to the most common psychiatric diagnosis
- A comprehensive psychiatric history including previous treatments, hospitalizations, and medications.
- Medical history consisting of current medical problems and surgeries
- A family history of psychiatric illnesses
- Substance use history
- Social history consisting of pertinent issues regarding work, school, and relationships
How long will my initial evaluation take?
A comprehensive psychiatric examination includes a 60-90 minute face-to-face session with a psychiatrist. The focus of the interview is on current concerns and symptoms which are interfering with functioning and well-being.
What happens after my evaluation?
- A psychiatric diagnosis is commonly established; psychological testing may be obtained to arrive at a more precise diagnosis.
- A treatment plan will be established between the psychiatrist and patient that may include the use of psychiatric medications.
- Laboratory testing, as well as other tests, may be obtained to clarify the diagnosis or to rule out medical causes.
- 30 minute follow-up appointments will be scheduled at approximately 2-3 week intervals to monitor your symptoms and response to medication.
How often will I need to see my psychiatrist?
As long as you remain on medication, you will need to have follow-up appointments with your psychiatrist to monitor your symptoms and side effects from the medication. In the beginning of treatment, you will likely be seeing your psychiatrist every 2-3 weeks. As your symptoms stabilize, your appointments may be every 1-3 months.
I need a last minute refill of my prescription. What can I do?
We understand that sometimes you “just forget” to call. In those urgent situations, we will do our best to get your prescription called in as quickly as possible. There are certain medications that cannot be filled without an appointment. If it is after hours, you will need to wait until the next business day.
Do I have to see a psychiatrist if I see a counselor at CCS?
No. We provide psychiatric services as an option to you. The decision to seek this type of service will be made by you, with the help of your counselor.
Where do I get my medication filled?
You can take your prescription to Wilce Student Health Center’s pharmacy or any other pharmacy in the area. Cost may vary depending on insurance coverage and the pharmacy you choose. Check with your insurance provider for details.
Are the medications expensive?
Several medications are available in generic form and many are also available through the $4 programs available at many pharmacies. Discuss these concerns with your doctor so he/she can be sure to select a medication that is affordable for you.
Do I need to continue with my therapist if I am taking medication?
Yes, the policy at CCS is that in order to see a psychiatrist, you must be seeing a therapist at the same time. This combination of therapy and medications has been shown to have the best success in treatment of depression. Depending on your progress, this requirement may be modified over time.
