Veterans

What are some common reactions veterans have in adjusting to college? 

  • frustration
  • difficulty concentrating
  • recurring thoughts of war experiences
  • difficulty relaxing
  • feeling out of place
  • feeling anxious or depressed

What can you do?

Take care of yourself physically.

-Get plenty of sleep
-Eat a good diet (at least 3 nutritious meals a day),
-Get regular exercise
-Limit usage of alcohol, nicotine, or illegal substances.
-Follow a daily schedule to help yourself stay organized

Take care of yourself emotionally.

Limit your exposure to traumatic information
-Talk with friends and/or family members about what you are experiencing at school
-Recognize that others may not understand your service
-Pay attention to your reaction to things that happen in ordinary life situations. Learn to recognize the physical and emotional signs of stress.

Take care of yourself academically.

-Set reasonable weekly goals
-Ease into your academic work by not taking too heavy of a courseload initially
-Get involved in school activities as a way to break down barriers between you and your classmates.
